Hike, Bike, Ride, or Drive

Our beautiful days are numbered, kind of. We choose to be optimistic and believe Top 10 Weather Days can happen even in the dead of winter. But fall weather and Mother Nature combine to put on a spectacular show and our weather has been cooperating lately. Our own Maplewood State Park is one of the best places in the state to enjoy the changing seasons. Luckily for us, this park is accessible by foot, bike, horse or car. Set a date and visit the park soon; it's a breath of fresh air that will brighten your day! The park is just west of Dent, MN on Hwy 108.

Why Autumn makes us smile...

  • Change is in the air.

  • It's sweater weather.

  • Mother Nature hosts a spectacular color show.

  • It's either Pumpkin or Apples.

  • From pumpkin spice lattes to apple pies, apple bars, applesauce raisin cake... we love the fall flavors!

  • It's the last call for bonfires & s'mores and truly cozying up to the fire. Football games & Homecoming. Harvest and gardens of plenty.

  • Halloween & Jack o'lanterns.

  • Longer evenings & candlelight.

  • Time to curl up with a new book.

But also fall is a time to look ahead... Plant tulips! Soak up the sunny days and head outside. October is the perfect time to plant tulip bulbs, and next spring you'll be delighted with the color and signs of life. Drifts of a dozen or more bulbs of one variety will make the most impact. Dig the whole planting area 6"-8" deep, space the bulbs according to the package directions, fill in the soil and water well. If you add bulb fertilizer, add it below the bulbs. Jean's Right Plant Place has tulips available for purchase!

PERHAM FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE

Tuesday, Oct 18th is the date! Bring along a kid if you want, tour the fire barn, and meet our area volunteer fighters in person. From 4:30pm to 6:30pm the Fire Department will host an open house at the Fire Station, 525 West Main Avenue, Perham.

Local Fire Fighters will offer tours of the Fire Station. Guests can check out the fire trucks, examine the fire fighter's tools, and possibly even spray some water! Hot dogs, chips & beans will be served until gone.

Here at The Call we love good news, and we admire those doing good deeds. We can't think of anyone more deserving of our admiration than the local firefighters and EMS crew. Thank you! Firefighters & EMS respond to the call, no matter the weather, the time or what they're busy doing. They work incredibly hard, go through many hours of training annually, and give up their free time at home to serve us. The City of Perham, and surrounding townships and villages can never say it often enough, but 'thank you so very much for your service!
